Hello, Sadness

Soft Feet at the Door

Before the sun finished rising, something grey and quiet padded under the door.

No knock-knock, no calling. Just hush-hush soft footsteps across Mina’s floor.

Pip offered a morning bounce. Mina could not bounce back. Her smile would not start.

Mama sat on the bed. “A heavy little visitor may be near your heart.”

No Reason in Its Pockets

Ponder asked the grey shape, “Did something happen? Did something go wrong?”

Sadness checked both pockets. “No reason,” it murmured. “I simply came along.”

Mina frowned. “Must I know why my middle feels rainy?” Mama answered, “No.

We can care for a feeling before we understand it. I’ll stay while it goes.”

The Slow-Motion Morning

Mina’s socks took forever. Her spoon felt too heavy. Even sunlight felt loud.

Sadness spread softly like a low woolly blanket or a small indoor cloud.

Pip slowed all his hopping. Ponder lowered his voice. Mama cancelled the race.

“This morning needs room,” Mama said without fuss. “We can move at your pace.”

A Name for the Grey

Mina touched her chest. “This feels low and droopy, like rain with no end.”

“Sadness,” said Ponder. The grey visitor nodded. “That name fits, my friend.”

Saying it did not brighten the cloud into sunshine. It made the cloud clear.

“Hello, Sadness,” said Mina. Pip sat at her left. Mama stayed very near.

Tears Go Drip-Drop

One tear reached Mina’s cheek. Then another went drip-drop and plopped on her sleeve.

Pip brought a soft cloth. He did not say, “Cheer up.” He let Mina grieve.

Mama asked, “Would a cuddle feel good, or more space?” Mina chose Mama’s knee.

Sadness leaned there too. No one pushed it away. All three could simply be.

The Blanket-Tent Hush

Ponder pegged one blanket from chair back to sofa. A quiet tent grew.

Inside went two cushions, one lamp, and warm water. Mama crawled in too.

Pip made no big jokes— just a tiny slow shadow that waved on the wall.

Mina watched it in silence. Sadness watched beside her. No laughter was required.

One Small Want

After a long while Mama asked very softly, “What might help one bit?”

“Warm toast,” Mina whispered. “Cut square, not triangle. And please, may we sit?”

Mama brought the plate in. Pip guarded each crumb. Ponder poured water slow.

Sadness still had soft feet, but Mina had a want. That was enough to know.

A Patch of Sun, Still Grey

At noon one sun-patch slipped through the curtain and warmed Mina’s two toes.

She liked that small warmth. She still felt her sadness. Both truths softly rose.

“I can feel one good thing without sending Grey away,” Mina told Pip.

Sadness stretched in the sun. Mama smiled nearby. Ponder gave one slow blink.
