The Small Button and the Bright Green Feather

A Muddly Little Button

Mina’s round red button would not find its buttonhole. It ducked left and right.

She pinched it each morning. Mama helped when asked. Today she wanted to try.

Pip held the coat steady. Ponder watched from the rug. No one hurried her hand.

Push, wiggle, pull— the button popped through! Mina gasped, “It can!”

A Feather Pops Up

From Mina’s warm middle sprang one green feather with a bright little FWEET!

It tickled her chin. It lifted her shoulders. It bounced with her feet.

“I did that small thing!” Mina cried to Mama. “I kept trying each day!”

Mama knelt close smiling. “That sounds like Pride. Let’s hear what it says.”

Pride Tells the Whole Story

Green Pride said, “Remember the slips and the stucks, the times help came too.

Remember slow fingers, one breath, and more practice. The last push was you.”

Mina stroked the feather. It felt warm, not boastful. The story was true.

Ponder said, “Pride shines best when it honors the effort, not only the finish.”

Mina practiced saying, “I am proud I kept trying,” first softly to Pip.

Then she told Mama clearly. Mama listened with joy. “You worked at that grip.”

No enormous parade. No trumpet through breakfast. Just eyes meeting eyes.

The feather shone brighter because Pride had been noticed in a warm, honest size.

Pip’s Pompom Parade

Pip tied pompom tassels to spoons and two slippers. “A parade!” he cried.

He marched round the table. Green Pride grew taller and puffed Mina wide.

“I am best at all buttons!” she started, then paused. Ponder raised one brow.

“One button is plenty to feel proud about,” Mina corrected herself now.

Mama brought two baskets. One held a feather. One held three books.

“Pride can feel light when it tells your true effort. It grows heavy with looks—

when ‘I worked’ becomes ‘I’m better than everyone.’” Mina tried each load.

She chose the green feather. “My work is my story. Friends have their own road.”

Pip Tries His Own Button

Pip found a toy coat with one moon-shaped button. He pushed—then missed twice.

Mina almost grabbed it. Instead she asked, “Want help, or another solo try?”

“One hint,” Pip decided. Mina showed the buttonhole. Then Pip wriggled through.

His yellow feather popped. Mina’s green one still shimmered. Both prides could be true.

A Try That Does Not Work

Mina tried the tiny cuff with its much smaller button. Her fingers slipped apart.

Green Pride did not vanish. “The coat button still counts,” she said from her heart.

“I need help with this one.” Mama guided her fingers. Pip held the sleeve tight.

Pride could sit beside learning. Not doing everything did not dim its light.
