A Drizzly-Day Question

Rain tapped the window with a drip-drop drum. Mina sighed at the grey.

“No park,” she grumbled. “No sunshine, no picnic. Nothing special today.”

Ponder turned a small basket upside down on his head. “Then special may hide!”

Mama smiled from the kitchen. “Hunt safely indoors. I’ll be your treasure guide.”

Five Empty Star Spaces

Mama drew five stars on a twisty paper trail and set it on the floor.

“Find five tiny helpers, warm moments, or wonders. There may be even more.”

“Must I like the rain?” Mina asked with a frown. “No,” Mama replied.

“Thankful and disappointed can walk the same trail right here side by side.”

The first clue smelled crunchy. It popped from the toaster with a buttery ping.

“My breakfast warmed me,” Mina said to the toast. “That is one helpful thing.”

She drew a golden crumb inside the first star. Pip sniffed for a bite.

“Thank-you number one,” Ponder sang to the basket. “Small, warm, and just right.”

The next clue was stripy and hiding by shoes: Mina’s soft woolly socks.

“They keep puddle-cold toes warm indoors,” she noticed. Pip paraded round blocks.

Mina drew two zigzags inside the second star. The rain still drummed away.

“Grey weather stays grey,” Mama said from nearby. “Warm toes still help the day.”

A crayon rolled under the long blue sofa. Mina reached but missed.

Pip wriggled beneath it and nudged it toward her. “Crayon rescue!” he hissed.

“Thank you for helping,” Mina said with a grin. Pip bowed to the floor.

She drew one small pawprint inside the third star. The basket glinted more.

Drip went the gutter. Tap went the pane. Plink went Mama’s tin.

Ponder tapped two teaspoons. Mina shook the rice jar. Soon Pip joined in.

“I still miss the park,” Mina said through the rhythm. “And this music is fun.”

A silver rain-note filled the fourth star. Two true things became one song.

The last clue said, “Look for a steady grown-up who helped with the trail.”

Mina peered behind curtains. Pip checked a cupboard. Ponder checked the mail.

Then Mina saw Mama keeping close by the kettle. “The treasure is you!”

“Thank you for staying.” Mama opened her arms. “And I’m thankful for you.”

They tipped in the trail, the spoon and the sock, but the basket stayed plain.

“Where are the glints?” Pip asked, looking puzzled. “Did they wash down the drain?”

Ponder tapped Mina’s chest. “A thank-you is noticed, then spoken or shown.”

It needn’t be captured or kept in a basket. Its warmth can be known.
