A Brand-New Bridge

At the park stood a bridge with green rails and boards that went wobble-clack-clack.

“It joins both towers!” Pip cried from the ground. Then Mina stepped back.

A blue Maybe fluttered from her belly to throat. “What if I slip through?”

Mama came to her side. “We will check it together. No one will rush you.”

The bridge gave one jiggle when another child crossed. Blue Maybe grew wide.

It whispered, “Too wobbly! Too tall! Turn around!” Mina wanted to hide.

Ponder said, “Fear notices what might not be safe. That is useful to hear.”

Pip stopped saying, “Easy.” Mama stayed close. There was room for the fear.

Mama pressed every rail. She checked every board. The bridge held firm and sound.

“This is built for children. I’ll stay at your shoulder. Soft matting covers the ground.”

Mina watched two crossings. She saw careful feet and hands holding tight.

Blue Maybe still trembled. Checking did not erase it. Checking made facts bright.

“My feeling is Fear,” Mina said to Mama. “It thinks I may fall.”

Mama answered, “Thank you. We can honor that warning and choose not to cross.”

“Or choose one tiny try,” Ponder added softly. “Both choices belong to you.”

Fear perched on Mina’s shoe. Pip waited without bouncing. The sky stayed clear blue.

One Hand, One Breath

Mina wrapped one hand round the low green rail. Mama held the other.

In came a slow breath. Out went a long whoosh. Pip breathed with Ponder.

Fear fluttered fast but Mina’s feet stayed planted. “This is my first step.”

She did not cross yet. She stood by the bridge. That choice still counted.

Next Mina touched one board with the toe of her shoe. Wobble went the bridge.

“Blue Maybe is shouting,” she told Mama clearly. “Please stay at this edge.”

Mama stayed beside her. Ponder counted three breaths. Pip guarded the ground.

Mina tapped once more. Then pulled her toe back. Fear stayed safe and sound.

“That is plenty for now,” Mina said, stepping down. Her knees felt like peas.

“No crossing?” asked Pip. Then he caught himself quickly. “You choose what you need.”

Mama praised her clear stop. Ponder bowed to Blue Maybe. Fear had helped Mina speak.

Brave was not only forward. Sometimes brave said, “Enough,” when a body felt weak.

After snack and some swinging, Mina looked at the bridge. “I want two steps more.”

Mama checked the green rail. Pip waited below. Ponder stood near the tower.

Step one went wobble. Step two went clack. Fear flapped in her chest.

Mina stopped there smiling. “Two steps with Fear were the steps I chose best.”
