Hello, Excitement

Tomorrow Has Dinosaurs!

“Tomorrow,” said Mama, “we visit the museum with dinosaurs tall!”

Mina bounced from the sofa. Pip bounced from a cushion. Ponder did not bounce at all.

A honey-gold tickle zipped up from her toes and buzzed round her head.

“Tomorrow! Tomorrow!” Mina sang to the ceiling. Then it was time for bed.

Fizz-Buzz Under the Blanket

Mina pulled up her blanket. Fizz-buzz went her feet. Her knees would not stay still.

She pictured giant fossils, a tooth, and a tail and a long stony frill.

Pip whispered, “Sleep now.” That only made Tomorrow bounce brighter instead.

Mama sat by the bedside. “A very big feeling has climbed into bed.”

Name the Honey-Gold Zoom

Ponder asked, “Is it worry? Is it joy? Is it both?” Mina listened inside.

“It is Excitement,” she said. “I want morning right now. The wait feels too wide.”

Honey-gold Fizz bowed. “I bring you bright pictures and quick tippy toes.”

“Welcome,” said Mina. “We’ll make you some room from my head to my nose.”

Tell Mama Every Buzz

Mina told Mama, “My excitement is lovely and also too fast.

My body wants bouncing. My brain keeps on planning. How long will night last?”

Mama listened seriously. No “Settle down, silly.” No shooing the glow.

“Thank you for telling me. We can help your body rest while excitement says hello.”

The Morning Picture Plan

On three little cards Mama drew: dress, breakfast, then dinosaur door.

Mina placed them in order. Pip added a backpack. Ponder added one more:

a question-mark card for surprises they could not plan. Fizz read every sign.

“Tomorrow has a pathway!” Mina said with relief. “It needn’t happen tonight.”

Ten Toes Do Ten Taps

Before lying down, Mina gave Fizz ten toe taps on the soft bedroom rug.

Tap-tap went her left foot. Tip-tip went her right. Then Mama offered a hug.

Mina asked for one squeeze. Pip counted the tapping. Ponder counted slow breaths.

Excitement kept sparkling. Her legs felt less jumpy. Rest came one step closer.

A Parking Place for Questions

“What if the tail is huge? Can we see fossil eggs? May I wear my red hat?”

The questions zipped everywhere. Ponder caught each on paper and parked them flat.

Mama promised, “At breakfast we’ll read every question and answer what we know.”

Fizz curled round the pencil. Mina’s mind had a parking place. Its traffic could slow.

Excited and Sleepy

Mina yawned an enormous wibble-wobble yawn. Fizz still hummed in her chest.

“Can I be excited and sleepy together?” “Yes,” Mama said. “Both can rest.”

Pip tucked in her toes. Ponder dimmed the lamp. The picture cards waited near.

Tomorrow stayed tomorrow. Tonight held warm blankets. Mama’s chair stayed here.
